The above website is a list of suggestions as to how one would go about caring for a loved one with alzheimers. According, at least, to people in the United States.

Above is a link to a site that list the different hospitals in Tonga, and on which islands they are located. It also lists the contact information for each one. I plan to contact the hospital closest to the place I will be staying, and searching our volunteering opportunites before arriving in the country.

This is a book written for students who have an interest in problems with aging and dementia. It helps one first recognize the symptoms and then understand how to deal with the disease.

Murphy, H. B. M., Taumoepeau, B. M. 1980. Traditionalism and mental health in the South Pacific: a re-examination of an old hypothesis. Psychological Medicine, 1980, Vol.10(3), p.471-482.

This is an article dealing with mental health in Tonga and the South Pacific. "Today most societies are rapidly changing, but Tonga still fits that model and the evidence suggests that the psychoses are genuinely infrequent there. It is proposed that both the theory and the evidence deserve further examination."

The above source is a compilation of data (pretty easy read which is nice) that discusses the care of the elderly in Tonga, from a nurses standpoint. This can give me a basis for how the elderly are cared for, because I assume that that is at least the baseline for how Alzhiemers patients are cared for in the home.

Really awesome book that discusses social and behavioral effects of Alzhiemer's disease.
